چکیده

The best medium for callus proliferation from hypocotyl and cotyledon explants of aseptically grown seedlings of two Egyptian landraces of rare wild plants, Ecballium elaterium and Cucumis prophetarum was found to be Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 0.1-0.5 mg/l NAA in combination with BA at 2 mg/l. On the other hand, MS medium supplemented with 2 mg/l BA, 60 mg/l adenine sulfate and 170 mg/l KH2PO4 was the best medium for shoot proliferation after a phase of callus formation. The content of cucurbitacins in suspension cultures was elicited by application of different concentrations of NaCl (salt stress) and methyl jasmonate (MeJA). The highest yield of cucurbitacins (0.1898%) was reached after three days of culture in liquid medium containing 200 μM MeJA. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Rapid Detection of Cucurbitacins in Tissues and in vitro Cultures of Ecballium elaterium (L.)

Introduction: Cucurbitacins are highly oxygenated compounds abundantly found in Cucurbitaceous genera such as Citrullus, Cucumis, Cucurbita and Luffa (11). A relatively common cucurbitacin found in Cucurbitaceous species is cucurbitacin E (CuE). Although cucurbitacins exhibit positive effects both pharmacologically (1-3, 6, 14, 17) and in protecting the plants from certain diseases (5), they ha...

The cucurbitacins D, E, and I from Ecballium elaterium (L.) upregulate the LC3 gene and induce cell-cycle arrest in human gastric cancer cell line AGS

Objective(s): Cucurbitacins exhibit a range of anti-cancer functions. We investigated the effects of cucurbitacins D, E, and I purified from Ecballium elaterium (L.) A. Rich fruits on some apoptotic and autophagy genes in human gastric cancer cell line AGS. Materials and Methods: Using quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR), the expression of LC3, VEGF, BAX, caspase-3, and c-MYC genes...

A Micropropagation Protocol for Ecballium elaterium ( L . ) A . Rich

Introduction: Squirting cucumber, Ecballium elaterium (L.) A. Rich. (Cucurbitaceae), is a wild medicinal plant found abundantly in the Mediterranean region. It has been utilized as a rootstock for many cucurbitaceous crops, mainly attributed to its resistance to abiotic as well as biotic stress (2). Important pharmacological uses (1, 9) are attributed to the bitter principles, cucurbitacins (5)...

The Cultivation and Cucurbitacin Content of Ecballium elaterium (L.)

Introduction: Although Ecballium elaterium (L.) A. Rich., is considered as a minor crop in the Cucurbitaceae family. However, its medicinal virtues (3, 8) and its resistance to pests and diseases (6, 7), have made the plant a suitable candidate to improve crop quality in Cucurbitaceae species. Cultivation studies were aimed at assessing the growth of the plant and the variation of cucurbitacins...

Background: The plant Ecballium elaterium (L.) A. Rich, belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family which occupies an important position in traditional medicine prescriptions. It has been reported that a freeze-dried aqueous extract of E. elaterium fruits has cytotoxic effects on the AGS human stomach adenocarcinoma cell line. We here focused on anticancer effects of the main chemicals purified from E....
